The Visitor Center is situated within the exceptional setting of the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery, overlooking the historic site of Omaha Beach. Its placement and landscaping reflect a sensitive interpretation of the major landscapes defining the area: the D-Day landing beach, the coastal cliffs, and the Norman *bocage* (hedgerow landscape).
Positioned at the northeastern edge of the American Cemetery, the building was designed to reveal the site’s vastness to visitors and offer prime views of Omaha Beach and the horizon, helping them better grasp the scale of the assault launched from the sea on June 6, 1944. The landscaping complements this framing of the scenery: the parking area draws inspiration from the vegetation patterns of the Norman *bocage*, while the garden located north of the Visitor Center creates a natural transition between the cliffs, the coastline, and the cemetery’s meticulously maintained grounds.
Following the storms of 1999 and 2013, a reforestation campaign was undertaken alongside the creation of wooded windbreaks designed to bolster the landscape’s resilience and enhance protection for the site.
