Park of the Headquarters of a Private Cultural Foundation  --

Landscaping of the 3.5-hectare historic park surrounding the Palacete Henrique Mendonça—a historic landmark in the heart of Lisbon that now serves as the international seat (Diwan) of the Ismaili Imamat. Drawing on the tradition of early 20th-century Portuguese Romantic gardens, the park features a network of winding paths punctuated by scenic vistas and viewpoints.

D PAYSAGE’s intervention focused on restoring and enhancing this landscape heritage by integrating new uses while respecting the site’s topography and *genius loci*. The project involved regenerating historic vegetation—complemented by new plantings to create a remarkable arboretum—and reusing existing materials through traditional Portuguese construction techniques.

The historic gravity-fed irrigation system, powered by rainwater, was restored and brought back into service. Extending this heritage feature, a network of water channels inspired by Mughal gardens was created and connected to the existing system. Meandering through the park and following the natural terrain, the channels irrigate the new plantings while introducing coolness, movement, and the soothing sound of water to the heart of the gardens. Facing the Palacete, a 24 × 15-meter infinity reflecting pool showcases the building’s majestic architecture. Water cascades over all four sides via a continuous *chadar* (or *salsabil*)—a feature specially designed for the Diwan and carved from green marble—while a historic Mughal *chadar*, integrated into the park’s hydraulic network, extends this water-focused design, uniting the structural elements of both Portuguese Romantic and Islamic garden traditions.

In 2026, the Palacete Henrique Mendonça and its park received the Portuguese National Urban Rehabilitation Award in the « Best Commercial and Service Use Intervention » category, recognizing the exemplary quality of this heritage restoration.
